The hot water heater has gone, and water has saturated at least half of my carpeted basement. Heater will need to be replaced, as will the carpet probably. Everything was fine last night, but sometime between then and 8pm tonight, disaster struck.

This is because I replaced the furnace and AC, but ignored the hot water heater. Karma.

Yep. The rule of 3.

I figured I was lucky -- we got to mine when there was only about a pint on the concrete underneath it.

I estimate that we sucked up at least 6 gallons of water last night, and there's more under the carpet.

so sorry to hear this. It does seem to be what water-heaters do, unfortunately. About every 10 years, just after the warranty expires :(.

Yes, but I wish it hadn't flooded the carpet as well. That is really annoying. These additional expenses always come at the worst time....

Pollyanna says look on the bright side.

This is a blessing -- imagine if the heater had broken a few weeks from now when you are at Pennsic!

*I* vote that you thank your lucky stars

But yes ... unexpected repairs bite the big one.
(I'm in a weird mood today. Again.)
