I spent a considerable amount of time yesterday on the stick-purse project. I realized that the Goubitz book included some line drawings (from paintings by Jan Steen) which show that the pouches are attached to the stick using a method that I had ruled out as unlikely.... After finding one of the original Jan Steen paintings on the Net, its seems pretty clear that I need to drop Plans A&B, and go on to Plan C. Leather for the pouches and pouchlets has been cut out and is waiting to be sewn up.
I tried a sample piece last night but it did not turn out well. Despite the fact that I'm using the same weight of leather as I've used to make gloves in the past, I had a difficult time using only the glovers needle to pierce the leather. I might need to make the sewing holes before I start.
